Frequently Asked Questions

These are the questions students actually ask, with the honest answer to each.

The bot answers these too

You do not have to come here. Type /help in Discord and pick a question from the second list. It is the same text, in German or English, and it is always the text of the running version.

The questions live in src/util/translations.py. This page is rendered from them, so the site and the bot cannot say different things.

I see no commands when I type /

Discord caches the command list and refreshes it lazily.

Press Ctrl+R, that reloads the client.

After a new version it can take up to an hour.

My module is not found

/module only works with the suggestions, not with free text.

Type less and wait a moment, then the list appears.

Pick an entry, otherwise the command finds nothing.

If nothing fits, search by criteria with /filter.

Where does the module data come from?

From the faculty module table on cloud.ovgu.de.

The dean of studies office maintains it, not we.

OSCAR only reads it and never writes back.

The to the handbook button opens the official page in BookStack.

A module shows something wrong

The data is not ours, we cannot correct it ourselves.

Send us /feedback with the module name and what is wrong.

We pass it on.

A comparison with the handbook helps us a lot.

Does OSCAR warn me about clashes?

No. OSCAR does not know any times.

LSF offers the dates through no open interface.

So check clashes yourself in LSF.

The to LSF button takes you straight to the search.

How do I take a module out of my plan again?

Open /semesterplan.

Next to every module there is a red X.

One click takes the module out right away.

From seven modules on OSCAR shows a list. Pick the module in the menu Remove a module then.

You add one with the button on the module card from /module.

I picked the wrong programme

Just run /start again.

It overwrites your settings.

That covers language, semester, programme and examination regulations.

The modules you saved stay.

Who can see my semester plan?

Only you.

/semesterplan, /start, /filter and /feedback answer you privately.

Others in the channel see nothing and can click nothing.

/standard_plan, /progress and /my_data are only visible to whoever runs them, too.

Others only see what you share yourself: a review without your name and that you joined a study group.

What does OSCAR store about me?

Your discord id, your language, your semester, your programme and your examination regulations.

Plus the modules you saved and any feedback you sent.

And what you enter yourself: ratings, study groups and code golf solutions.

/my_data shows you all of it and deletes it if you want.

No name, no mail address, no tracking of what you do.

The privacy policy on the documentation site has the details.

Can I use OSCAR in a private message?

Better use OSCAR on the server.

/start reads your semester from your server role.

In a private message that role does not exist.

The answers are private anyway, nobody reads along.

Does this work on a phone?

Yes, everything works in the discord app.

The picture of the standard study plan is wide.

Turn the phone sideways or tap the picture to zoom.

Which platforms does the FIN use?

Course material: eLearning, the university Moodle (elearning.ovgu.de). Log in with your OvGU account.

Exams: LSF (lsf.ovgu.de). A registration only counts there.

Module handbook: BookStack (bookstack.cs.ovgu.de), no login needed.

Code: FIN GitLab (isggit3.cs.ovgu.de), FIN account.

Open all four in /help under “Open”, Learning platforms.

Still stuck?

Use /feedback in Discord. It reaches us directly and you can write freely.

Tell us three things:

  • what you were trying to do
  • what happened instead
  • a screenshot if you have one

You can also write to the project authors:

Missing a question?

The FAQ grows from real questions, not from guesses about what people might ask. If yours is not here, send it with /feedback and it will be.

See About OSCAR for what the project is and where it stands.
